Hearing baby cries, Claire wakes up in the night. She gets up and is no longer pregnant. She walkes through the jungle and finds Locke, who tells her that it was her responsibility and she gave him away; now everyone has to pay the price. She hears crying again and sees something moving. She finds a crib and moves the blankets, finding blood. Screaming and crying, she wakes up everyone in the cave. Charlie helps her and tells her she was sleepwalking and that it was just a dream.

The next morning, Jack is giving her bandages for her hands, since she dug her nails into her palms during her nightmare. She tells him that it was the first time she has ever sleepwalked. When Jack asks how long she’s been pregnant, she flashes back to when she first found out. Although she and Thomas, her boyfriend, are upset, they contemplate keeping the child.
Later, Jack talks to Kate on the beach, who says she’s worried about Sayid, who still hasn’t returned. Jack tells her that Claire will have the baby soon. Meanwhile, after Claire rejects Charlie’s offer to become “friends”, she has another flashback. Claire is going to move into Thomas’ loft soon, and Claire and her friend go to a psychic. A few seconds into the reading, the psychic knows that she is pregnant. As the reading continues, the psychic gets a look of terror in his eyes. He gives Claire her money back and refuses to do the reading.

That night, everyone is again awakened by Claire’s screaming. She tells them all that she was attacked. Michael and Jack stay with her while the others look for her attacker. Jack leaves and catches up with Hurley, who tells him that they don’t even know everyone. He even reveals that his real name is Hugo; Hurley is his nickname. Hurley then comes up with the idea of doing a census. When Charlie gives Claire a blanket and tells her not to worry and that he’s not going anywhere, she has another flashback. After Thomas arrives at the loft, he tells her that he doesn’t want to be a father anymore and then leaves her.
As Hurley begins his census, Jack tells Charlie and Kate that he thinks that nobody really attacked Claire, causing Charlie to get mad at him. In the jungle, Hurley finds Ethan and marks him on the census. In the cave, Jack tells Claire that he thinks she just imagined it and tries to give her sleeping pills. She gets upset and leaves the cave. In a flashback, Claire goes back to the psychic. He agrees to do a reading. He
knows that Thomas left her and tells her that the reason he stopped the last reading was because he saw something “blurry”. He continues the
reading and tells her that Thomas will have nothing to do with the baby or her and that she needs to raise the baby herself. He says danger surrounds the baby and Claire’s goodness must influence the child. She tells him that if she doesn’t get back together with Thomas, she will put the baby up for adoption. When the psychic tells her again that she must raise it, she decides to leave. Later, the psychic calls her in the middle of the night trying to tell her about his plan.

Charlie manages to catch up with Claire, who is headed for the beach. Meanwhile, Boone tells Hurley that Sawyer has the flight manifest, and
Hurley convinces him to give it to him. As Charlie and Claire are talking, she starts having contractions, and Charlie lets slip that he is a drug addict. He then runs to get Jack. Claire has a flashback of her at the adoption agency. When she tries to sign the papers, none of the pens will work. She then decides to not give up the baby and then goes to the psychic to hear his plan. Meanwhile, Charlie finds Ethan and tells him about Claire and to go get Jack. When Charlie goes back to her, Claire’s flashback continues as the psychic tells her that he found an agency in Los Angeles that is willing to take the baby. Claire tells Charlie about it and that the psychic was full of it, but Charlie disagrees, saying that the psychic may have known that the crash would happen and she would be forced to keep the baby. Claire then realizes it was all a setup. After the contractions stop, the two head back to the cave.

Back in the cave, Sayid arrives and tells them about Rousseau and The Others. Just as Hurley comes to the cave and tells them that one of the survivors wasn’t on the plane, Ethan catches up with Claire and Charlie and is staring at her!

On the beach, Sayid is looking through his photos. As he looks around, he sees a wire sticking out of the sand. He picks it up, revealing it to be attached to a big cable running from the ocean into the jungle. As he follows it, he accidentally steps into a trap and is hung upside-down.
After hours of hanging, someone comes and cuts him loose. After falling to the ground, Sayid only sees a blur of the person before he passes out. He awakens and finds himself tied down, and there is a woman asking where Alex is. When he tells her that he doesn’t know what she’s talking about, she flicks a switch and he is electrocuted. He then has a flashback to abusing a man during an interrogation. Afterwards he is talking to his superior officer and sees the woman in his photos.
Back in the cave, Locke and Ethan arrive with stuff they found in the jungle. As Hurley looks through the stuff, Walt asks Locke if he can join him on the hunt, but Michael stops him. Elsewhere, Sayid begs for her to stop and mentions the French woman’s transmission, and then the woman reveals herself to be the French woman. She doesn’t believe that he just happened to hear her transmission and says that she knows what he is. She then knocks him unconscious. When he awakens, he sees her name on a jacket – Rousseau. He looks around and sees batteries, but he tells her that the batteries wouldn’t have been able to power the transmission for 16 years. Rousseau tells him that it is being broadcasted from somewhere else, but “The Others” have control of it now. She says that she believes that Sayid is one of The Others. She then finds the envelope of Sayid’s photos and asks who the woman in the photos is; he says that her name is Nadia.
In a flashback, Sayid is interrogating Nadia. She reveals that they knew each other when they were little, but he still threatens to hurt her if she doesn’t talk. However, when she shows him her wounds from other interrogations, he becomes upset. He still tells her that if she doesn’t talk, he will hurt her, but she refuses to. The flashback ends as Rousseau sees a bullet wound in his leg. He tells her that he used to be a soldier a long time ago. When she asks to hear more about Nadia, he asks who Alex is.
In the cave, Walt is bored, and Hurley finds something in the luggage and is excited. He borrows a stick from Michael and runs off. Meanwhile, Rousseau asks why Sayid was alone even though he claims there were other survivors. He tells her that he left camp because he was ashamed. When Rousseau asks if he left Nadia, too, he says that she wasn’t on the plane and that she’s dead because of him. Rousseau tells him that she wants to show him something and then runs off.
Elsewhere, when Michael is showing Jack his plans for showers, Charlie tells them that Hurley wants to show them something. Hurley reveals that he has made a golf course! Meanwhile, Rousseau shows Sayid a broken musicbox that was from her love, Robert. She says it comforted her during the first few years on the island, and Sayid offers to fix it for her if she frees his hands. She immediately gets up, grabs a sedative, and injects it into him with a hypodermic needle. Back on the course, Jack and Michael are playing golf.
When Sayid wakes up, he is chained to a chair. Rousseau apologizes, saying it was the only way to safely move him. As he begins to repair the musicbox, Sayid asks Rousseau questions. Rousseau says that her first name is Danielle and that she arrived on the island by boat. After leaving Tahiti, her boat’s instruments malfunctioned and a storm came. The boat crashed into rocks and couldn’t be repaired. After two months of being on the island, the rest of her team was killed by The Others when they were returning from the Black Rock. When he asks if she has seen The Others, she replies that she only hears them. In another flashback, Sayid sneaks Nadia food. He offers her the chance to get out if she’ll talk, but she still refuses.
On the beach, others hears about the golf course. Boone, Shannon, and Kate leave to check it out, but Sawyer stays behind. Meanwhile, Sayid fixes the musicbox. When he hands it to Rousseau, he manages to steal her hypodermic needle. When he asks to be let free, she won’t let him go because it’s not safe. They hear a loud animal, and Rousseau grabs a gun and leaves. As Sayid looks at the rifle she left behind, he has a flashback of being told to execute Nadia. Although he disagrees with it, he follows orders and goes to get Nadia. The flashback ends as Sayid frees himself, grabs maps and supplies, and leaves, accidentally leaving the picture of Nadia behind.
As Michael and the others are busy playing golf, Walt goes into the woods. Sayid then runs into Rousseau. The two face off with their rifles.
Another flashback begins with Sayid trying to free Nadia. When his superior officer catches him, Sayid shoots and kills him and then shoots himself in the leg to make it look like Nadia did the shooting in her escape. He gives her his gun and she runs. As the flashback ends, Sayid pulls the trigger, but the gun doesn’t fire. Rousseau tells him that Robert never noticed that the firing pin was removed when she killed him. She then reveals that she killed her team because they were “sick”. Sayid tells her that he knows what it’s like to lose someone and still hold on, and he asks her to come back the beach with him. She lets him go but doesn’t go back with him. As she leaves, Sayid asks who Alex is, and she replies that it was her child.
On the golf course, people start betting on whether Jack will sink the ball or not, and Sawyer arrives. Meanwhile, Locke is teaching Walt how to throw a knife. As Sayid is running through the jungle, he begins to hear whispering sounds.

As Kate is walking along the beach, she comes across Sawyer’s belongings. When he sees her, he comes out of the water, naked. When she walks away after he hits on her, he has a flashback of having sex. His girlfriend then remembers that he has a meeting and that he’s late for it. When she tells him, he rushes to get dressed and grabs his briefcase, which comes open and spills bills of money onto the floor. When she sees the money, he tells her that she wasn’t supposed to have seen that.
The flashback ends as Sawyer is walking through the jungle. He hears noises around him. He begins running and then catches Boone looking through his stuff.
Meanwhile, Jack is cleaning Sayid’s wound that he got from getting hit on the back of the head. After Sayid tells Jack what happened, Shannon arrives with a beaten-up Boone, who tells them that Sawyer did it.
As Charlie visits Claire and tries to convince her to move to the cave, to which she refuses, Jack is cleaning up Boone’s wounds. He tells Jack that he was looking through Sawyer’s stuff because Shannon’s inhaler ran out and, and he believes that Sawyer has her other inhalers. Jack goes to Sawyer and demands that he give Shannon her inhalers. When Sawyer refuses, the two are about to fight, but Kate interrupts. After Kate and Jack leave, Sawyer has a flashback to explaining about the money to his girlfriend. He says that he’s buying a share in an oil mining operation for $300,000, but he only has $140,000, so he’s going to meet with an investor to get more money and split the profit. However, his girlfriend offers to pay the rest instead. When he asks how she can, she says that she’ll get it from her husband.
A little later, Kate goes to Sawyer and offers a trade for the inhalers. He says that he’ll give it up for a kiss from her, but Kate doesn’t believe him. She then tells him that she knows about the piece of paper that he keeps in his pocket. He angrily gives her the letter and makes her read it. The letter is from a child. It says that Sawyer had sex with his mother and stole all his father’s money, and the father then killed her and himself. The child vows to one day give this letter to Sawyer so he’ll know what he did. Sawyer then asks Kate for the kiss, but when she doesn’t, he walks off.
Elsewhere, Sayid talks to Locke about who attacked him. Locke says that he thinks Sawyer did it since he has the most to gain by staying on the island. When Sayid tells him that Sawyer was miles away at the time, Locke suggests that Sawyer may have just delayed the rocket’s fuse.
Later that night in the cave, Shannon is having breathing problems. Jack demands that Sawyer give him the inhalers, but he once again refuses. Jack then begins attacking Sawyer but stops when he sees the horrified looks on everyone’s faces. As Jack walks off, Sawyer has a flashback of tricking his girlfriend’s husband into investing.
Back on the beach, Claire tells Charlie that she’s craving peanut butter. They then make a deal that if Charlie gets her peanut butter, she has to move to the cave. Meanwhile, Jack helps Shannon through an asthma attack. Sayid then convinces Jack to let him ^interrogate^ Sawyer. He and Jack then knock Sawyer out and tie him up in the jungle. When Sawyer still refuses, Sayid begins sticking reeds under his fingernails. He then threatens to cut out Sawyer’s eye, and he finally gives in. Sawyer tells them that he’ll only tell Kate where the inhalers are. Sawyer then has a flashback about talking to his ‘business partner’. It turns out that the oil mining operation was just a scam. However, the business partner tells Sawyer to get him his money or else.
As the flashback ends, Sawyer sees Kate. He says that he’ll tell her only if she gives him the kiss. After they share a long kiss, Sawyer reveals that he never had the inhalers! After punching him, Kate walks off and tells Jack. Sayid doesn’t believe Sawyer and goes after him with a knife. However, Sawyer gets free and the two struggle. Sayid ends up stabbing him in the arm, hitting an artery. After Sayid runs to get the medicine bag, Sawyer flashes back to when he was closing the ‘deal’. As he is about to leave their house, his girlfriend’s son walks into the room. Sawyer stares at him and suddenly says the deal is off. As the husband starts arguing, the wife lets slip about the deal she had with him, and Sawyer then leaves.
Sawyer later wakes up on the beach, and his arm is bandaged up. Kate tells him that she reread the letter many times, trying to figure out why he lied to everyone. She then reveals that she knows his secret; the letter wasn’t written to him! He wrote the letter when he was a child, and it was meant for the real Sawyer!
Elsewhere, Sun gives Shannon herbal medicine, and it helps her asthma. As Charlie gives Claire some imaginary peanut butter so she’ll go to the cave, Sayid leaves the camp because he is ashamed of what he did.

In the cave, Charlie is playing his guitar and seems to be suffering from withdrawal. Locke asks him to come on a walk with him so he can get some fresh air. Meanwhile, Kate catches Jack looking at her mug shot. He says that he came back for his stuff and asks her to come with him to the cave. She tells him ^no^ again, so Jack heads off as Sawyer arrives at Jack’s old tent to move in.
In the jungle, Charlie gets separated from Locke. When Charlie calls for him, he hears animal sounds. As he runs, he flashes back to himself in a confessional box. As he talks to the priest, he decides to quit his band. As he is about to depart, he sees Liam, a fellow band member, who tells him that they got signed to a record deal. As the flashback ends, Charlie is being chased by a wild boar. When he gets trapped with no place to run, the boar gets trapped in a net by Locke, who was using Charlie as bait. Angry, Charlie demands that Locke give him his drugs back. Locke tells him that if he asks for the drugs three times, then he’ll give them to him. When Charlie asks why he just doesn’t destroy the
drugs, Locke replies that if he did do that, then Charlie would have no choice.
On the beach, Sayid, Kate, and Boone get ready to go into the jungle to try to triangulate the French woman’s message. However, the power cells are dry, so they all have to be in position before they can turn each antenna on. Sayid gives them fireworks to signal each other. Before they can do that, they must first get a battery for the transceiver. Kate visits Sawyer, who has been hoarding all kinds of stuff since they first arrived. After some talking, he hands over a laptop battery.
When Jack and Hurley arrive at the cave with suitcases, Charlie tries to help and accidentally causes the medicines to spill out. As he puts them back in, he searches for any drugs that he can take. However, Jack tells him that he doesn’t need any help. During another flashback, Charlie agrees to the record deal, but only if things won’t get too out of hand.
In the cave, Jin is cleaning his injured hand, which still has the handcuff on it. When Sun comes over to look at it, Jin tells her to cover herself up because what she is wearing is ^indecent^. For once, however, she stands up for herself and refuses because it’s too hot. When Hurley tells Charlie that Jack wants him to find another place for his guitar because it’s getting in the way, Charlie gets mad at Jack and follows him into another part of the cave. Charlie starts yelling at him for treating him like a child and disrespecting him. His loud yells cause the cave to collapse in. Charlie makes it out, but Jack is trapped inside. As Charlie runs to the beach to get help, Sayid and Kate are walking through the jungle. Sayid tells her that they shouldn’t have survived the place crash with nothing but a few scrapes, but she disagrees, saying that they’re just lucky. When Charlie arrives at the beach, the others go with him to help. Boone tells Shannon that when Kate and Sayid signal, she needs to signal them and then activate the antenna. Charlie looks for Kate, but Sawyer tells him that she already left with Sayid. Before Charlie can go after her, Sawyer tells him that he knows which way she went and that he can handle it. Charlie flashes back to a performance. When the chorus comes up, which is Charlie’s part, Liam continues singing. When Charlie confronts him backstage, he says that he got caught up in the moment and that it won’t happen again. He then watches as Liam pulls out drugs and goes into a room with a woman.
The others get to the cave and Michael, who has experience in construction, leads the rescue. Sawyer catches up with Sayid and Kate, but when she gets an attitude about him following them, he decides not to tell her and says he came to help. Charlie goes to Locke, who is skinning the boar, and he asks him for the drugs. Locke tells him about a moth and its struggle to emerge from its cocoon. If he helps the moth by freeing it, the moth will die due to being too weak, but if it struggles and frees itself, it will be strong. Locke then says that if he asks again for the drugs, he will give them to him.
When the rescue team manages to make a hole, they can hear that Jack is still alive. Meanwhile, Sayid finds a suitable spot for the second antenna and sends Sawyer up a tree to install it. Sayid then leaves Kate with Sawyer and heads on to install the final antenna. Back in the cave, they decide that since Jack can’t move, they’ll have to send someone in to free him; Charlie volunteers. As Kate and Sawyer wait for Sayid’s signal, Sawyer lets slip about what happened to Jack, causing Kate to run off to the cave.
As Charlie crawls into the hole, he flashes back to catching Liam drunk in the dressing room with a group of girls. Charlie tells him that he’s walking away from the band, but Liam tells him that he’s useless if he’s not in the band. After Liam storms off, Charlie finds his stash of drugs. As Charlie crawls further in, the hole collapses and seals him inside. Charlie finds Jack, who has dislocated his shoulder, and helps him relocate it. Charlie has a flashback to visiting Liam in Sydney, who is no longer in the band and has started a family. Charlie offers him the chance to restart the band in California, but Liam doesn’t want to. When Liam realizes that Charlie is still using drugs, he offers him to stay at their house and get professional help. Charlie gets angry and then leaves to catch a plane.
The flashback ends as Jack reveals that he knows about Charlie’s problem and asks why he never asked for help. Charlie tells him that he didn’t because he thought that he was useless, but Jack tells him that he’s not. Charlie then sees a moth and follows it. He sees light and digs out of the cave.
Meanwhile, Sayid, Shannon, and Sawyer all signal to each other and then activate each antenna. Sayid begins to track the signal, but is knocked unconscious from behind. That night, Kate makes Jack a sling for his shoulder and Walt asks Michael if they can stay in the caves. Also, Charlie asks Locke for the drugs for a third time. Keeping his word, Locke reluctantly hands them over, but Charlie tosses the drugs into the fire. As Locke tells him that he’s proud of him, Charlie sees a moth, free of its cocoon, fly away.

As Sun is smelling a flower, she watches as Kate, Jack, Locke, and Charlie get ready to go get water. She then has a flashback to her at a party held by her father, and Jin is a server. The two sneak off and begin kissing. Sun tells him that she wants to get away to America, but Jin tells her no because he doesn’t want to elope. He tells her that he will talk to her father to try and convince him to allow them to marry, but she tells him not to. The flashback is then interrupted when Jin suddenly attacks Michael and tries to drown him in the ocean. Luckily Sayid and Sawyer arrive in time and save Michael. As Jin struggles, they handcuff him to the plane.
Meanwhile, in the jungle, Kate, Jack, Locke, and Charlie arrive at the small waterfall. As the others refill their waterbottles, Charlie sneaks off to use drugs. Before he can, however, Locke tells him not to move because he’s standing on a beehive! Kate and Jack then go to find something to cover it.
Back on the beach, they are trying to figure out why Jin attacked Michael, who claims he did nothing. As they leave Jin handcuffed, Sun has a flashback of Jin telling her that her father gave permission for them to be married. However, Jin has to work for her father first.
In the jungle, Charlie slaps a bee on his face, causing him to move and collapse the hive. Everyone runs as the bees attack. Kate and Jack run into a cave and find very old, decaying corpses. Jack pulls a small pouch off of one and opens it, revealing two small stones, one black and one white. Locke and Charlie find them and see the corpses.
As Sun is putting herbal medicine on Jin’s hurt wrist, she flashes back to when Jin gave her a puppy since he was rarely at home due to his long work hours. She then asks him if he remembers when all he could give her was a flower, but her father calls Jin’s cell phone before he can answer her.
Back in the caves, Jack tells Kate that carrying the amount of water they would need for everyone would be too much trouble. He then gets the idea of using the cave as a shelter. Elsewhere, after Michael sees Walt looking over at Jin and then gets Walt away from there, he finds out that Walt knows nothing about him. Sun begs Jin to let her explain why he attacked Michael, but he won’t let her. In another flashback, the puppy is now grown, and Jin arrives home angrily. He goes into the bathroom and she follows. She then sees blood on his clothes and asks what happened. When he doesn’t reply, she realizes that the blood isn’t his. He then says that he was working and she asks what he does for her
father. He tells her that he does whatever her father wants him to do.
After Kate and Jack leave to return to the beach, Charlie begins to wander towards the cave exit, and Locke seems suspicious. Locke then tells
him that he knows who he is – the bass player in Driveshaft.
As Jack and Kate near the beach, they find Sayid chopping wood. As he takes a break, he tells them that he is going to try and communicate with Sun. Jack then tells him about the caves, and Sayid is angry because if any rescue planes fly over the island, they won’t be able to see them in the caves. Jack and Sayid then begin to recruit people to either go to the caves or stay on the beach.
When Sun sees Michael chopping wood, she walks closer and has a flashback of talking to a home decorator. She and the decorator then go into the bedroom and talk, revealing that she isn’t a home decorator, but is actually helping Sun leave the country! The plan is to make it look like Sun has been kidnapped and is dead. As the flashback ends, Sun walks up to Michael and says she needs to talking to him, in English! Michael is in shock that she knows how to speak English and asks her why she never told anyone. Sun replies that Jin doesn’t even know. She then tells him that Jin has an angry temper and that the attack was a misunderstanding. It turns out that the watch Michael is wearing, which he found two days earlier, belonged to Sun’s father, and protecting it is and honor to Jin. She then asks Michael for help.
Elsewhere, Locke is following Charlie wherever he goes. Charlie tells him to stop, and Locke tells him to give him the drugs. When Locke asks Charlie if he’d rather have his guitar back than the drugs, Charlie says ^more than you know^. Locke then says that if Charlie gives his drugs to the Island, it may give him his guitar. Charlie hands over his drugs to Locke, who tells him to look up. When Charlie does, he sees his guitar case stuck on roots above the cave.
As Jack is preparing to leave, Kate tells him that she wants to stay on the beach. He lets her stay and then leaves for the caves. Meanwhile, Michael returns to the watch to Jin and breaks him free with the ax. He then tells Jin to stay away from him and Walt. Sun, who is watching, has a flashback of the day of departure in the airport. As Jin is waiting in line behind Jack, she begins to leave but then decides to stay with Jin.
As Charlie is playing his guitar that night in the cave, Jack, Hurley, Sun, Jin, and the others arrive at their new home and settle in. Back on the beach, Sawyer, Kate, Michael, Walt, Sayid, and the others sit quietly around a bonfire.

During a flashback, Jack remembers standing up to a childhood bully to protect his friend, although he quickly loses the fight. Charlie’s yells about someone in the water awaken him. Jack swims out, but the person disappears before he can get to him. Jack submerges and comes back up with a nearly unconscious Boone. Boone asks Jack if he got her, making Jack realize that the person in the water wasn’t Boone but someone else.
He looks around and sees a woman yelling for help. Jack takes Boone back to the shore and then swims back out.
Unfortunately, he doesn’t make it to her in time. Later, upset at himself for taking Boone back to shore before going after her, Jack looks at the ocean and sees a man in a suit standing in the shallow water. When Jack moves for a closer look, the man vanishes into thin air.
Meanwhile, as Walt is cleaning his teeth with one of Sun’s “toothbrushes”, Sun tells Jin that they should try harder to communicate with the others, but he disagrees. As Kate and Claire begin bonding, Hurley informs Jack that they’re running out of food and water. When Hurley and Charlie ask Jack to decide what they should do, he has another flashback.
A very young, beaten up Jack enters his father’s room and they talk about the fight. His father tells him not to try and save everyone, because when he fails, he doesn’t have what it takes. An angry Boone interrupts, asking Jack why he didn’t leave him to save the woman. As they begin to argue, Jack once again sees the man in the suit. Jack follows him into the jungle, and when he finally catches up with him, he discovers that the man is his father! The man then disappears into the jungle.
In another flashback, a now older Jack is being told by his mother that his father is gone. She then asks that Jack bring him back, but he says that his father hasn’t talked to him in two months and doesn’t want to. She begs him to bring him back and then mentions that Jack did something. Jack agrees to find him, and his mother says that his father is in Australia.
Meanwhile, Walt runs to Kate and tells her that Claire fell down. They take her into the tent to cool her down, and she wakes up. Charlie runs to get the water, but he discovers that it has been stolen! Locke volunteers to get more and goes into the jungle. As Jack searches through the jungle for his father, he has another flashback. Jack is in Australia and in his father’s hotel room, which hasn’t been used for three days. Jack snaps out of it as he sees his father again in the jungle. He runs towards his father and falls off a cliff. He manages to grab onto a plant and hangs. Locke finds him and pulls him up.
Back at the beach, Charlie gives Claire the remaining water. Meanwhile, Hurley tells Kate and Sayid that Sun and Jin have water. When Sayid confronts Sun about it, Jin tells them that Sawyer gave it to them. Kate and Sayid follow Sawyer into the jungle and he pulls out a buried bag of stuff. After a brief struggle with Kate, Sawyer tells them that he traded his last water to Jin for a fish. As they depart, Sawyer tosses Kate the marshal’s badge since she’s the “new sheriff in town”.
Back in the jungle, Locke asks Jack why he was in the jungle, and they talk. Locke tells him that the island’s magic may be making whatever he’s chasing real. Locke leaves as Jack stays. Later that night, Jack has a flashback about being in a morgue. He identifies his father, who died from consuming too much alcohol. When the flashback ends, Jack hears his father and chases after him. He finds a tiny waterfall and a doll in the water. He looks around and sees pieces of the plane and packs of suitcases. He then finds the coffin in which his father’s body was in. After a brief flashback of Jack convincing the airport to allow his father’s coffin to go on the plane, he opens the coffin, revealing it to be empty.
On the beach, Boone sneaks into the tent and gives Claire water. Charlie catches him and the camp turns on Boone, but Jack arrives and tells them to leave Boone alone. Jack tells them that he has found water and that they need to start working together, and that night, they all have plenty to drink.

The episode opens inside Locke’s dream. It’s right after the crash and he is lying on his back. He opens his eyes and sees the chaos before him. People are running around and screaming and pieces of burning plane lay everywhere around him. He picks his head up and cautiously looks down towards his feet. He wiggles his big toe, everything works.
It is real time now, Locke awakens from his dream because of Vincent’s barking. The dog wakes up the entire camp. He is barking at the fuselage. Jack and the others get closer and listen; they hear something inside the fuselage. But everything in there is dead. Jack thinks its Sawyer, but Sawyer is right behind him. Sawyer shines his flashlight into the fuselage. They see two shining eyes looking back at them.
Three squealing animals come racing out of the wreckage and run through the camp into the jungle. Locke says they are Wild Boars. They were eating the bodies, which had been baking in the sun for the last 4 days. Jack says they need to do something but they can’t bury them because the boars will dig them up. Jack makes the only decision he can; the bodies must be burned.
The camp realizes they are out of food. A panic begins to spread throughout the camp so Locke devises a plan to solve the food problem. He says they will hunt the boars. What are they going to hunt with? Locke shows everyone the case of knives he checked into the luggage compartment.
FLASHBACK: Locke is sitting in his cubical at work. He gets a phone call from someone who calls him “Colonel”. Is he in the military? Locke is sitting in the break room playing a war board game with a co-worker. His opponent calls Locke “Colonel”. Locke lectures him on war leadership. Turns out Locke isn’t in the military, he just has an active imagination. Another coworker comes into the break room and makes fun of Locke for talking about leadership. He then asks Locke about a brochure that was on his desk. It is for an authentic aboriginal walkabout in Australia. Locke tells him he had no right to take that off his desk. The man makes fun of Locke and says “You can’t do it”. Locke responds “Don’t tell me what I can’t do.”
On the island, Michael is preparing to hunt with Locke. Walt wants to go too, but Michael manages to communicate with Sun enough to convince her to watch Walt until he returns.
Meanwhile, Sayid hatches a plan to try and locate the source of the French woman’s transmission. He makes a homemade antenna that will help triangulate the signal. Kate says she wants to help him and informs Jack of her plan before she goes out on the hunt with Locke and Michael.
At the fuselage, Claire is collecting the personal belongings of the dead passengers. She is planning to use them in a eulogy before they are cremated. She asks Jack to give the eulogy but he doesn’t want to. She decides to do it herself.
Boone tells Shannon that one of the survivors, Rose, has been sitting alone down the beach. He is pretty sure that she hasn’t had any food or drink since they crashed. Shannon isn’t interested in what he’s saying; she’s doing a crossword puzzle. Boone tells her that she would starve without his help. Shannon vows to catch a fish to show him she can take care of herself.
In the jungle, Locke has found the boar trail. He knows they are close. He tells Michael and Kate to go out to surround the boar, but suddenly it turns and charges them. Michael is gored in the leg as everyone falls when they try to run away. Kate gets up to help Michael and calls over to Locke. He responds by saying “I’m fine, Helen, I just got the wind knocked out of me.” Who is Helen?
FLASHBACK: Locke is having an intimate phone conversation with “Helen”. He has a surprise – he finally saved up enough money to go to Australia and take that authentic aboriginal walkabout. He bought her a ticket too. Sadly, Helen does not have the same feelings for Locke as he has for her.
Kate agrees to help Michael get back to the beach. Locke leaves them and says he is going to get the boar. Kate tells him he can’t do it. Locke responds “Don’t tell me what I can’t do.” He is determined to kill that boar.
On the beach, Shannon flirts with Charlie. She asks him if he knows how to fish. He says his grandfather taught him everything about fishing. She asks him to catch her one and he is more than happy to do so…as soon as he gets Hurley to teach him how.
Jack makes his way over to Rose and talks to her, hoping she will open up to him. She will not respond so Jack sits in silence next to her for awhile. She finally talks and tells him about how her husband’s fingers would swell up when they flew. She wore his wedding ring around her neck for safe keeping. She is constantly rubbing the ring. Even though he has not been found, Rose believes her husband, Bernard, is still alive. Jack convinces her to join the others for the memorial service.
Claire finds an envelope with Sayid’s name on it. He opens it and finds pictures of a woman inside it. Sayid cannot take his eyes off her.
On their way back to the beach, Kate climbs a tree to attach the antenna. When she gets to the top, she sees the monster knocking down trees as in charges through the jungle in the distance. She drops the antenna and breaks it. The monster is heading straight for Locke.
On the beach, Walt is learning how to brush his teeth with nature with some help from Sun. Michael and Kate return. The camp learns that the hunt was not successful and, worse, that Locke is most likely dead.
As Jack is finishing preparing the fuselage for the burn, he sees a man in a suit standing in the forest. He chases after him and finds Locke. He survived his encounter with the monster….and he brought a boar back with him.
Night falls, the fuselage is burning, and Claire reads the names of the dead in a memorial service. Michael congratulates Locke on the hunt and asks if he got a good look at the monster. Locke says he didn’t see anything.
But as we get one more glimpse into his past, we learn that Locke is keeping a secret.
we find out that a man was not able to walk but now he can.

While Jack is helping the marshal, he tells Jack to look in his back pocket. Jack does and discovers a mug shot of Kate. Later, Hurley goes with Jack to the tent and finds the mug shot, discovering Kate’s secret as well. Elsewhere, in the jungle, Kate and the others decide to not tell the rest of the survivors about the transmission so they won’t give up hope. During the night, Boone steals the gun but is caught in the process. When everyone fights over it, it is decided that Kate should keep it. As she takes it, she has a flashback of being caught in a sheep pen by a farmer. After talking with the farmer, she agrees to help him with his chores if he allows her to stay at the farm.
The next day, Sayid tells everyone that they never picked up a signal. Kate, however, tells Jack the truth about the signal and about the French woman. Hoping to find medicine, Jack then goes into the plane wreckage and also discovers Sawyer, who has been looting dead bodies. Later, Kate sneaks into Jack’s tent and hovers over the marshal. She then has a flashback about being caught by the farmer as she is trying to sneak away. The farmer manages to convince her to stay for the night, promising to drive her to the train station the next day. The flashback ends as the marshal wakes up and tries to strangle her. Jack runs in and pulls him off of her, and the marshal passes out. As Jack goes to get water, he tells Kate that the marshal has only a few days left, and he then tells her that he knows the truth about her. Jack walks off, and Kate has another flashback. On the way to the train station, the marshal drives up behind the farmer’s truck. Kate realizes that the farmer turned her in and asks why. He tells her that it was so he could pay his mortgage with the reward money, but it was a very hard decision to make.
Keeping his promise to Walt, Michael goes into the jungle to find Walt’s dog. However, he is soon chased out by some wild animal. That night, Sawyer tries to convince Kate to put the marshal out of his misery by using the gun. Later, Kate has a flashback about swerving the truck off the road, causing it to flip over. She pulls the unconscious farmer out and drags him up to the road. However, that gave the marshal enough time to catch up to her. The flashback ends as Kate goes into the tent, and the marshal asks her what the favor was that she was going to ask for right before the plane crashed. She replies that it was for him to make sure that the farmer gets his reward money.
Jack, after hearing from Hurley that Kate has a gun, rushes towards the tent as Kate walks out. He is relieved, but he then hears a gunshot. Sawyer steps out holding the gun, and Jack is furious. They then hear gagging sounds and rush in. Jack discovers that Sawyer had been aiming for the marshal’s heart, not the head, and had instead penetrated the lungs. An upset Sawyer waits outside as Jack helps the marshal. When the gagging sounds stop, Jack emerges from the tent and walks away.
The next day, Locke blows on a whistle he made, and Vincent the dog emerges from the jungle. After tying him up, Locke tells Michael where Vincent is. As Kate tries to tell Jack about the crime she committed, to which he refuses, Michael brings Vincent to a very excited Walt.

The survivors are now scavenging the plane for their luggage and other things needed for their survival. And Claire is starting to worry about the condition of her unborn child who may have been affected by the crash. In the jungle, a young survivor name is Walt is searching for his dog that was on the plane. He ends up finding a pair of handcuffs instead. The possibility of a criminal on the plane leads to an immediate assumptions. One survivor named Sawyer is quick to accuse Sayid (who just happens to be Middle Eastern) of being a terrorist, and a fight breaks out between them on the beach. Jack, Kate, and Charlie return from their jungle trek in time to help break up the fight. They enlist Sayid’s help in getting the transceiver to work. Sayid informs Kate that they need to find a better place to get a reception from the transceiver.

And so another jungle trek begins…this time they will have to go into the hills and get a reception before the battery on the radio runs out. Jack is unable to go because he must perform surgery on an unconscious man with a shrapnel in his body. Two siblings Shannon and Boone have an argument which leads Shannon to request joining Sayid and Kate on their hill trek. Boone must join to keep an eye on Shannon, while Charlie joins just for fun. Sawyer watches the five heading into the jungle and he catches up to join them. They climb hills and trek through tall grass but still no reception on the transceiver. Suddenly they hear a noise coming closer and closer. Kate and Charlie worry after the fuselage incident. All of them except Sawyer start to run. Instead Sawyer takes out a gun and begins shooting at the creature charging towards him. The creature is shot several times in the head and lies dying before Sawyer. The other five gather around. To their shock and confusion the charging creature happened to be none other than a polar bear. Kate questions Sawyer about where he got the gun. He tells her he got it off the man that Jack is tending to. That man happens to be a Marshall who was escorting the anonymous criminal on the plane.

The six continue their trek and now high up in the mountains they get a signal but Sayid is unable to communicate an S.O.S. because another signal keeps taking over the transceiver. The six start out full of hype believing now that they were going to be rescued, it eventually turns into fear and confusion as the blocking message on the transceiver begins to play over and over and over. With the battery running out, Shannon is asked to translate the repeating looping message which is being spoken in French. The message has a woman’s voice repeatedly calling for an S.O.S. But Sayid calculates that the message has been replaying itself… for 16 years. The six are now more afraid and confused than ever. Perhaps this was no ordinary deserted island after all…
